Jesus understood the importance of leadership; He spent much of His ministry training up the leaders who would follow Him, and He brought revolutionary ideas to the subject. Two of my favourite quotes:

‘Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.’ (John 14:12)

‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.’ (Matthew 20:25-27)

Jesus taught His disciples that leadership included faith, reliance on God, vision, humility, service and sacrifice. What they learned enabled the Holy Spirit to lead through them, and therefore spread the gospel across the known world within a couple of generations.

God has always used leaders to further His Kingdom; people who lead with vision but also with humility; people who kick against the status quo in order to bring the Kingdom; people like Moses, David, Deborah and Paul in the Bible and people like John Wesley, Mother Teresa, Hudson Taylor and William Wilberforce in more recent times.

In the early 21st century the church has started calling these people ‘missionary entrepreneurs’ – those who start new projects that further the Kingdom: church plants, missional communities, social enterprises, justice campaigns, new businesses and more. These people spread the gospel, life people out of poverty, challenge injustices, and will disciple a new generation of believers around the world through their work.

At One Rock we love to support these people, providing training to make their missional dreams become reality. Kirstyn Oliver runs a business and is part of a church plant in south east London. She’s also joined our latest Academy of Spiritual Leadership. She wrote saying,

The workshop has made a massive impact on the way I will run my business, being more intentional in embodying the values, vision and mission … Thank you, I have learned A LOT! I feel excited about this year ahead, I’m encouraged and motivated to grow, both in work and personally.

What’s the vision God has placed on your heart? Why not take a faith-filled step of entrepreneurial risk, and start turning it into reality?
